LCD Backlighting For HDTV

The LCD on an LCD HDTV is a discerning filter. It will not itself emit light, however selectively filters light passing through the display in the back. Many HDTVs include either one sheet of luminescent vinyl or sidelighting with fluorescent lamps to supply the backlight. Both techniques are hard to control.

Many consumers revolve around display resolution when choosing a High Definition (HDTV) system. Can this HDTV 720p, 1020i, or even 1020p? The SMPTE rated contrast ratio, colour saturation, colour temperature and grayscale before display resolution in value. The Imaging Science Foundation reached an identical decision.

This may improve the contrast of the film. Additionally, a diminished backlight degree will also decrease power consumption and prolong lamp life, since the power employed and lamp life is directly related to the backlight level. A lamp with a 50,000-hour life at six milliamps might have a 30,000-hour life when the present is seven milliamps, just one milliamp greater (Example: Sharp Electronics LCD Display).

One other significant element in the selection of backlighting is that the thought of “blur”. Blur takes place whenever there is rapid movement in the programming, like sports. After the image varies rapidly, the pixels may lag in response. Successful backlight technology can reduce this considerably by strobing the backlighting, so the individual pixels don’t stay lit more than needed. Examples of the technique include the Philips “Aptura” along with also the Samsung “LED Motion Plus”.

Sidelighting

Together with side lighting, the backlight is situated in the back of the LCD panel, and also to every side to make panel lighting. Many LCD systems which utilize sidelighting utilize cold cathode fluorescents (CCF) lamps. This technology provides an extremely bright white light. The duration of these lamps is generally between 10,000 to 20,000 hours (6-12 years at a rate of 5 hours of usage every day).

The most significant drawback is that the degree of lighting can’t be varied locally, and side lighting may seem non-uniform. Some CCF lamps include mercury. This is an environmental drawback.

The Significant drawbacks:

The degree of lighting can’t be varied locally. This results in a decrease contrast image.
The lighting could be non-uniform.
Some CCF lamps include mercury.

Traditional Backlighting

Many backlighting is performed using one sheet of electroluminescent plastic. These panels may age (although improvements in this field have decreased this issue). Electroluminescent Panel backlighting utilizes coloured phosphors to generate light. Displays utilizing this technique may be lightweight and thin and offer even light distribution.

The Significant drawbacks:

LED backlighting employs a matrix of LEDs which may be controlled separately to offer quite good hands. In this setup, a high number of LEDs are mounted uniformly supporting the display. NEC initiated this technique by using their monitor, the 2180WG. Other businesses, such as Samsung, have lately introduced variants of the technology. This should push costs down (the Samsung version price less than 1/3 the purchase price of a similar NEC screen).
